Google Meet now has a smart feature that uses AI to translate spoken words during video calls. This means you can talk to someone in a different language, and they’ll understand you right away. Right now, it works with Italian, Portuguese, German, and French.
Fredric Lindstrom and Huib Kleinhout, based in Sweden and Norway, helped build Google Meet’s Speech Translation feature. It uses AI to instantly translate your voice during calls into another language – while keeping it sounding like you – so people can understand each other no matter what language they speak.
How AI Made it possible
Fredric leads the audio team for Google Meet. Two years ago, his team started working on a new feature called Speech Translation. Translation worked only after a call ended, not live. To fix this, they teamed up with Google DeepMind (Engineering team). They thought it might take five years, but in fast progress with AI, they did it in just two years.
Now, engineers from across Google—like Pixel, Cloud, and Chrome—are working together to make real-time speech translation possible during calls.
