The Government of India has introduced a new rule: apps like WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal, and Snapchat will only work if the SIM card linked to your account is active and inside your phone. This means – No WhatsApp Without Active SIM including Telegram, Signal and Snapchat.

Cyber crimes are rising fast. Fraudsters often misuse mobile numbers, fake SIMs, or inactive accounts to cheat people. By making sure every account is tied to a working SIM card, the government wants to:

• Stop online fraud and impersonation
• Make it easier to trace criminals
• Protect ordinary users from scams

Key Points of the New Rules

SIM Binding: Your messaging app must stay connected to the SIM card registered with it.

• No SIM, No Chat: You cannot use WhatsApp or similar apps without the original SIM in your phone.
• Web Logout Every 6 Hours: If you use WhatsApp Web, you’ll be logged out automatically every six hours.
• Immediate Effect: These rules came into force on November 28, 2025.
• Apps as Telecom Entities: Messaging apps are now treated like telecom services, with stricter security obligations.

What It Means for You

You’ll need to keep your SIM card active to use WhatsApp and other apps. Switching phones or using apps without the SIM will no longer work. If you use WhatsApp Web, be ready to log in again every few hours.
